Interview with The Hypes
The Scenester chats to Jamie Perry of The Hypes about gigs, influences and their latest release of '7 Years of Change'...
"It comes from the heart."
You recently released your ‘7 Years of Change’. How would you best describe the ethos of the EP? How has it been received by your fans?
"Well basically the answer is in the title, its about 7 years of how we've changed as people. The first line of that song says it all, '7 years of change and I've finally found me', most songs of ours are based on our lives really.
Our fans seem to like it and the tracks are always received well live. The favourite among them seems to be 'Follow Me Today' so we always try fit that into our set. We're hoping to release another one pretty soon so we hope this one will go down just as well."

"Well Lee and Jordan are cousins and they started it off with Davy in his garage just practicing every Sunday. Then a few months later I joined, we all knew each other from back at school basically. Then at the start of this year Holly joined who is Lee's sister so as you can imagine with 3 members all been related to each other there are a fair few arguments in the studio! "
You headlined recently at The Cockpit in Leeds. Is this your biggest gig to date and where can we catch you play in the future?
"We've played at Manchester Academy once before but to be honest our Cockpit headline was bigger and better. The gig sold out a couple of weeks beforehand so we knew from that point it was going to be something special. The atmosphere was amazing and it was probably the best performance we've ever given, it couldn't have gone better! We've not got any more dates lined up at the moment but as soon as we get some confirmed we'll whack them up on our Facebook. Just search 'The Hypes' and click 'like'"
I see that some of your main influences are Oasis and Stone Roses. What is about those bands which you particularly admire and aim to influence in your own music?
"The thing about these two bands is that they've written such legendary songs. If one of their songs comes on in the pub, or wherever, you're more than likely to get at least one person singing along. Ian Brown and Liam Gallagher are two of the best frontmen around and they're both so passionate about music."
Are you looking for the same fame and fortune as Oasis and Stone Roses?
"Obviously if I said no I'd be lying, we'd all love to have the same kind of impact as them."
Do you think Britain’s got talent? What is your impression of the current UK music scene?
"Britain certainly does have talent! We've got some great artists in this country, some who have even cracked America which we all know is hard to do. In the last few years I think the UK music scene has changed a lot. Its all about trying to be different these days and loads of bands are trying way too hard to do this. People think you have to have a certain style to be recognised. One of my favourite bands to emerge in the last few years is Twisted Wheel. Their debut album is great, I don't think there is one bad song on it."
What advice would you give to up and coming artists in the area?
"Stay true to yourselves and have a good time doing it! You just need to get out there as much as possible and show what you can do."
What’s next for The Hypes?
"We're hoping to get into the studio soon to get some new tracks done, maybe for a new EP. We're on a break from gigging at the minute as the last 2 years have been none stop. But as I said before, as soon as we get some dates they'll be straight on our Facebook. I'm sure it won't be long as we love playing too much and would rather be out there than at home watching Deal Or No Deal."
Any last words of wisdom?
"That's how it is!"
