The Charlatans The Brudenell

Unplugged, unpretentious and quite beautiful . . . Watching The Charlatans’ frontman Tim Burgess and Mark Collins play to an adoring Leeds crowd was an inclusive experience never to be forgotten. With the Brudenell buzz and constant background chatter, it was rather like having a musical genius play in your very own front room.

More romance than rock ‘n’ roll, the intimacy and love in the packed club was palpable. Life-long Charlatans fans opened their arms to a reverent Burgess and in return were embraced by sublime acoustic renditions of songs held dear. This was Tim Burgess up close and personal like never before.

Performing a lengthy and wide-ranging set reflecting the band’s longevity, Tim breathed an ethereal serenity into much loved classics.

‘Just When you’re Thinking Things Over’, ‘One to Another’ and ‘North Country Boy’ were crowd pleasers, and ‘This is the End’ and ‘Blackened Blue Eyes’ were excellently performed. The usually up-beat track ‘The Only One I Know’ became at once dark and contemplative, modestly performed, and beautifully illustrative of the poignancy of the evening.

To watch The Charlatans perform is always a pleasure, to have experienced this night was a privilege.
