Kendal Calling Interviews

Read our two brilliant interviews with The Whip and The Young Knives here as we chat to them at the recent Kendal Calling festival!

Interview with The Whip by Charly Murgatroyd

How are you finding Kendal Calling so far? What are your favourite festivals to play and why?

It seems lovely, really chilled out but we haven't had much chance to explore just yet except a little trip for some food. We're not one of those bands who just sits around backstage though we like to have a wander round. We played Secret Garden Party recently which was pretty much impossible not to enjoy and Fuji Rock in Japan was really cool. We just like the spirit of festivals and the fact anything can happen because there are no soundchecks to go through.

You're supporting The Music on tour this month including their sell out Leeds shows. How do you think the crowd will react with it being their homecoming gig?

We're only playing three or four dates this time around but we've played a few shows with them in Japan before and they're nice guys. As for the crowd in Leeds they're always a bit wild so we're looking forward to it.

The new album is out in September. Is it what people would expect from you or have you gone in a different direction this time?

It's pretty much what people would expect from us I think. We've tried to bare in mind what people liked about our first album and build on those things so there are still the strong build ups but we've put more effort into lyrics this time around. There aren't as many intentional loops in this one as there were last time.

You've remixed Hadouken!, The Editors and The Courteeners previously, who would your perfect remix be for?

That's really difficult actually. It wouldn't be our favourite band or anything that's already a dance song. It'd probably have to be someone from another scene so we could take something new into the club domain.

Do you still get nervous playing to big crowds?
It's pretty rare we get nervous, the only time I can remember recently was at Glastonbury.

Finally, what are your tips for new bands?
Just stay positive and say yes to every gig you're asked to play no matter what it is. You never know who might be in the crowd.
