In Helsinki are: Sammy D on vocals, Pat on lead guitar, Bambi on drums, Bower on bass guitar and backing vocals, and Dave on rhythm guitar. Members of the band all have different music influences from The Streets, The Cribs, Morrissey, Foo Fighters and UK Hip Hop.
The Sheffield band is an indie rock piece and has come a long way since starting in 2010. Earlier this year the band recorded their first EP in G2 studios in Sheffield named ‘Let go’ After gigging around Sheffield and local areas gaining fans, confidence and recognition, the band are becoming well known on the local music scene.
After writing new songs during the year, this Summer they went into the studio again to record their second EP. The band said the new songs would be a more moody sound with some melancholic numbers to bring a more distinctive edge to their sound.
The new EP named ‘Wired’ contains 5 songs which include some meaningful lyrics about life experiences. The first song called ‘Death by Misadventure’ is influenced from a quote the band saw in the news about a soldier at the battle of Hastings. The band admits they like reading quotes and stories in the news, or sayings, and working from those to form song lyrics. Quite original for an indie band out there today...most indie bands’ lyrics seem to be similar. In Helsinki sound like they are also in this for the writing as well as the music! The music on this EP is all about the powerful drum beats and heavy guitars, mixed with the powerful South Yorkshire accent which provides the deep husky lyrics telling us these tales and stories in an addictive way.
The second song on the EP is named ‘Scars’ and we can certainly see the Morrissey influences. A soft indie song with a powerful meaning. The next three songs in the EP are ‘Burden’, ‘The Beauty is the Beast’ and ‘Dear Melancholy’. It’s quite clear all 5 songs on this EP are from different angles and have different stories to tell. The story lyrics mixed with the guitar riffs and mighty drum beats provide us with a very addictive EP.
