The 20th June saw the release of the debut EP ‘Hello Anxiety’ by uprising Australian band Guineafowl. Pretty new to the music scene, Guineafowl only got together last August and are proving to be a big hit with a great local fan base and are slowing getting well known over here in the UK too. Influenced by The Cure and Beck, I can clearly see similarity in the way the lead singer sings with a soft vocal but also one which captures the audience well. Guineafowl decided to record their debut EP in a small room above an antiques store. With just a laptop but, more importantly, some big ideas, Guineafowl claimed it was not the most ideal recording place as it was near a main road so he had to keep stopping when he heard traffic and when customers came into the antique store!
The EP is a collection of life stories; Guineafowl claims it’s a collection of frustrations, fuck ups and elation. I listened to two of the tracks and was impressed; the song Little Fingers’ beginning line is ‘We can make a difference with our little fingers’. Even though a simplistic lyric, it speaks volumes as part of his life stories being portrayed through his music.
Simple indie music with an 80s feel, the guitars almost sound a little like Noah and the Whale but with Guineafowl’s own stamp on it. I can see Guineafowl becoming a popular indie band on the UK music scene. The debut EP is available on iTunes and UK tour dates will be announced very soon so look out for them!
