Apathy?
Apathy is possibly my favourite word of the moment. A state of indifference or the lack of excitement and interest for things that others find motivating or appealing. This sums up precisely my state of mind when I look around at the commercial and "popular" musical arena of today.
What's so exciting about Radio One's monotonous daily playlist? Why do we have to endure Bruno Mars and Alexis Jordan on repeat 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? What's so appealing about Rihanna when all she has to show is precisely that: the "show". Not the true performance, nor a musical aptitude or any form of diligently crafted lyrics.
I often wonder - am I alone in this apathetic frame of mind? Perhaps it's everyone else instead that's exhibiting inertia to what is actually the real talent out there. Is there not something better to offer to our wonderfully absorbent public?
This superficiality that is drummed into our ears and minds is relentless and once more I seek ever-growing newness that I profess is somewhat lacking in the glitz and glam that seems to govern the music industry today.
The Leeds Scenester is constantly on the look out to fulfil this newness and our home-grown talent of today is extraordinary. We will continue to support and aid the musicians which show the real gift, the real flair, against the ever-growing world of consumerism and commerciality which unfortunately presides over much of the music industry today.
One day I hope my apathy is unfounded. One day Rihanna might sing about such a word and know what it means. One day...
